On April 9, LEGO Group held the inauguration ceremony of LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam at VSIP 3 Industrial Park in Binh Duong. The factory spans 44 hectares and involves an investment of over $1.36 billion.

This is LEGO’s sixth factory globally and its second in Asia, equipped with state-of-the-art high-tech machinery to produce LEGO toys for the Southeast Asian market.

“I simply want to ensure that the planet children inherit as they grow up remains a place where life can thrive,” shared LEGO CEO Niels Christiansen.

The LEGO Vietnam factory plays a key role in LEGO’s global strategy to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with a target of reducing emissions by 37% by 2032.

Construction of the factory began in 2022, marking LEGO’s largest investment in Southeast Asia and the most significant foreign direct investment project in Binh Duong since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The factory has been equipped with 12,400 solar panels. Once fully operational, it will run primarily on renewable energy generated from this solar farm.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Vo Van Minh, Chairman of the Binh Duong People’s Committee, said the LEGO factory would serve as a model for other enterprises to follow in transitioning toward green, ecological, and sustainable production—an effort being strongly pursued by both Binh Duong province and Vietnam as a whole.

Mr. Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of LEGO Group, emphasized that the LEGO Vietnam factory represents the group’s strong commitment to sustainable development.

Once in full operation, the factory is expected to employ over 4,000 workers to produce toys that will benefit more than 60,000 children.

Over the years, LEGO has invested more than $1.2 billion (around €1.09 billion) in researching sustainable materials to replace plastic in its toy production.

According to Ms. Mimi Vu, co-founder of the consulting firm Raise Partners in Ho Chi Minh City, “Sometimes, it takes a major corporation like LEGO to lead the way and prove that sustainable manufacturing models can work and be profitable.”

The LEGO Vietnam factory will also utilize the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) mechanism, under which 10–20% of surplus energy will be sourced through agreements with other clean energy providers.

“LEGO and Vietnam share a green vision. Both want to contribute to climate protection. This factory proves that it’s possible,” said Mr. Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen, Senior Vice President for Asia at LEGO.

LEGO will also establish a distribution center in Dong Nai province to serve the Australian and broader Asian markets. Mr. Christiansen noted that situating the factory closer to consumer markets helps LEGO avoid impacts from tariff policies introduced by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

He also highlighted that all five production workshops at the factory meet high energy-efficiency standards. LEGO has planted 50,000 trees—double the number cut down during construction—and this is also the company’s first factory to replace single-use plastic bags with paper bags for product packaging.
