On April 23, the Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Viettel High-Tech Data Center and Research Facility at Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park, Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City. This will be a hyperscale data center, ranking among the top 10 in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam is set to have a data center with a capacity exceeding 100MW, classified as hyperscale, comparable to the world’s largest data centers.

Viettel has committed to implementing the project with the highest standards of speed, discipline, and quality. Phase 1 is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026, with full completion by 2030. The project marks a significant milestone in Vietnam’s data infrastructure development and was launched in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (1975–2025). Covering nearly 4 hectares, the center is designed with a total capacity of up to 140MW of power and approximately 10,000 racks. This is Vietnam’s first data center to reach over 100MW capacity, positioning it among the world’s hyperscale data centers.

The Tan Phu Trung Data Center is designed and operated according to the Uptime Tier III international standard, featuring an average rack power density of 10kW—2.5 times higher than Vietnam’s typical level—with peak capacity up to 60kW per rack, ideal for high-performance AI applications.

To achieve this high density, the center integrates advanced cooling technologies and an AI-based intelligent management system developed by Viettel. It targets an energy usage effectiveness (PUE) below 1.4, ensuring high operational efficiency.

The groundbreaking marks a major milestone in Viettel's journey to build Vietnam's national digital infrastructure, aligning with Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthrough development in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, and Decision 36/QD-TTg by the Prime Minister on information and communication infrastructure planning.

At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Vo Van Hoan, emphasized that this hyperscale data center project is one of the largest in the region. He highlighted its strategic importance not only for Viettel but also for promoting digital infrastructure, smart city development, and digital government initiatives in Ho Chi Minh City. The center will accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 5G, cloud computing, IoT, blockchain, cybersecurity, and Big Data, while boosting innovation ecosystems and creating high-value jobs to support the city's digital economy and society.

Major General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel Group, affirmed that the new hyperscale center is a strategic piece in Viettel’s comprehensive digital infrastructure ecosystem, complementing its existing 15 data centers operating in Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong.

This year, Viettel also plans to complete 20,000 5G base stations, ensuring coverage of 95% of urban residential areas nationwide, laying the foundation for delivering comprehensive digital services to citizens, businesses, and the government.
